SOM completes restoration of New York’s historic Lever House

Nice to see what a great job you can do with an old and maybe not so great looking building –

Classic slab on top of a podium slab. The green colour is distinctive, helps set it apart from other buildings around it.

A lot of modern buildings like to sit on top of posts – creates space underneath for people to circulate, as well as reveal the internal garden – I do like the reflective finish.

Beautiful buildings – by presidential order

Trump signed an executive order before he left office insisting all new federal government buildings must be considered “beautiful” and ideally be designed in the classical or traditional style.

The American institute of architects have denounced the order, although it didn’t go as far as banning modernist architecture, as was suggested when the order was in draft form.

Apart from stating that communities should be free to choose the architecture that works for them, it points out that the order makes government employees the judges of “taste”.

Modernism 2022 week, Palm Springs

Maison Bleue

This week is Modernism week in Palm Springs, Southern California – “an annual celebration of midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture”.

Takes place every February This exciting festival takes place in February and features more than 350 events. There is a smaller event every autumn.

Photo shows a 1950s house you can take a tour of.

Are these houses any more special than those in East Kilbride?
